September 2020 – Congratulations to Tim Gazdic who successfully defended his PhD thesis on September 8, 2020. He performed a range of beautiful scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of highly overdoped Bi-2212. Among the key findings is a strong charge-order like reconstruction which is actually due to quasi-particle interferences. He also observes for the first time the intrinsic electronic vortex core structure in this high-temperature superconducting compound. Imaging the vortices at unprecedented low magnetic fields in this material, he found a standard d-wave BCS like electronic vortex core structure – a fantastic result !
