International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The United Nations proclaimed 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. This marks the 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics. 

The UN declaration highlights the importance and impact of quantum science worldwide, as well as the need to raise public awareness of quantum science and its applications.  

In particular, the United Nations underlines the enormous potential of quantum science and technology to address societal challenges such as climate, energy, food production, health and clean water, as set out in its Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030.

“Applications foreseen in the next decades will see transformative advances in environmental sensing, the development of new materials, medicines, better batteries, more efficient solar cells, ultra-secure communications, and the ability of quantum computers to more precisely and accurately model complex physical systems critical to our existence, such as climate and extreme weather.”

The Geneva Quantum Centre (GQC) brings together UNIGE’s quantum expertise, in particular in quantum information and communication, quantum computation and simulations, quantum sensing and metrology as well as quantum materials.

Activities will be organized worldwide at all levels throughout 2025. At UNIGE, the GQC will celebrate this International Year with a series of initiatives to share and discuss the latest quantum developments. Stay tuned!
