Quantum physics around the corner
Sciences II – Auditorium A300 De Marignac

Behind the goofy title hides a Christmas conference in the purest original style, i.e., a scientific, demonstrative conference for the general public. Quantum physics is everywhere, sometimes we see it and sometimes we don’t. When should we explicitly refer to quantum physics to explain a phenomenon? This boundary problem is fascinating because it allows us to tiptoe into quantum physics, almost by breaking and entering, through the back door, so to speak. This is why we don’t get a blast of ultraviolet rays when sipping a cup of coffee, why we can see our reflection in a window while looking at the landscape, and why electrons don’t collapse onto the nucleus of atoms, which would be a bit inconvenient for the survival of the world.

Fabrizio Bucella is a professor of physics and mathematics at the Université libre de Bruxelles. This doctor of physics is also very active in popularizing science on social media, where his accounts have a total of one million followers. He also writes science columns for Belgian public radio and television (RTBF) and participates in “Les Grosses Têtes” with Laurent Ruquier on RTL France. His latest book is entitled “How to win at heads or tails? And other mind-boggling scientific puzzles.” It is published by Allary Éditions in Paris (2025).
